About The Band

"Týr's musical mission is to break down the walls that are erected between all the kinds of metal that have arisen over the years.... Walls and labels do nothing but fill people with prejudice."

Profession of the Christian Faith or Decapitation: This was the choice given by Sigmundur to his Faroese Viking compatriot Tróndur í Gøtu. And so it was that in 999 A.D., the Christianization of the small “Faeroe Islands” began, casting a veil of oblivion over the ancient Scandinavian gods and only leaving the relics of forgotten heathenry buried deep within the Christian ritual. Or so it was believed...

Exactly 999 years later, a small group fondly remembering the archaic gods and rites came together to form the Faroese Viking metal band, TÝR. The one-armed God of War —the bravest of all— became the eponym of the Nordic quartet. Yet TÝR mastermind Heri Joensen is no war monger in disguise and points out that TÝR (also known as the God of Justice) is also revered for first seeking the avenues of diplomacy—an attribute that does not take away from this god of war’s drive.

A distinctive trademark that sets TÝR apart from most other bands of the Viking metal genre is the authenticity of their music: “Traditional music dating back to the Vikings, that is not preserved anywhere else in the world, not even in Iceland, is passed on in an oral tradition here and it is still alive and well. That is what we build our music on and draw great inspiration from,” explains Joensen.

Almost every song is based on Faroese or Norwegian lore, and is riveted in the garb of the folk metal genre. Its approach unmistakably creates very true Viking metal.

Since 1998, all the way to today, God Of War, Týr, was honored to see his name being taken by guys from Faeroe Islands, as the title of their band which's music became The Beginning of something new and amazing in history of metal. Even though each band is just Sand In The Wind in this world of quick changes, Týr is, with their music and lyrics, often mixed with traditional sounds and stories, sure to take special place on Wings Of Time all across Ocean and Land, and bring up Excavation of the old lore to all the world.

They will take everyone, from whatever Nation, on a Ride through the Northern Gate and all the way through the Nine Worlds Of Lore, until you start wondering How Far To Asgaard. Flying Into The Sky, many will Envy you. And soon, Hall Of Freedom will appear on the horizon, and you will approach Valhalla, where Valkyrjan bring each time Another Fallen Brother to wait for Ragnarok, wait for The End. Flying on mighty sounds of this amazing band, you will be able to see the Fields Of The Fallen and the Lady Of The Slain crying tears of red gold there. They will also take you on a Ride To Hel, and remind you of Lord Of Lies and his mischief - how he made Hoder his Brother's Bane; and, By The Light Of The Northern Star, you'll take with Valkyries Flight, and hear The Lay Of Thrym, king of giants who had stolen Hammer Of Thor, and payed a bloody price. Victory belonged to gods then, and no giant stayed Alive after Thor set out for The Hunt to take back what was his.

By The Northern Lights, you will return to the world of men, Into The Storm, where you will hear the story of Eric The Red and of how he discovered new Land, and that of Trondur i Gotu, and of Christians who once said "By The Sword In My Hand I will conquer the land...", while the men of the old used to Hold The Heathen Hammer High. Seeing that, you will too say "Hail To The Hammer" and carve The Rune in the stone, to honor the old, and light Flames Of The Free for days gone by. You will remember the Blood Of Heroes from these days, and the Evening Star will lead you through these Dreams...

...back into the world you knew. And then you will hear the words "...and how alive though it seems, I was there in my dreams.", sung by great Heri Joensen, somewhere in front of you, on stage, in a crowded hall. Once you've heard it, you'll want to hear it again and again. You'll want to take a Ride on Wings Of Time Into The Sky and through Nine Worlds Of Lore again. And once more Hear The Heathen Call.
